Major Barriers
One of the main barriers preventing my involvement was, until January 2020, I commuted from Lebanon to Nashville where I worked at a large AM200 law firm. Between the time commitment to the firm and the commute, I did not have any time to be more involved in the community. Further, time commitments outside of the firm were more geared to involvement with Nashville or national organizations. One of the main reasons I joined Rochelle, McCulloch & Aulds, PLLC in January 2020 was so I could work closer to/with my clients, family, and the community of Lebanon. RMA greatly encourages local community involvement, and I am looking forward to serving the local community in and outside of the office.
Why Should You Be Selected To Participate
First, though I am not from Wilson County (I married a woman from here), but I have fallen in love with it, and intend to live out my life here. I have lived/worked in several different places--I grew up in McMinville, spent 4 years in Cookeville, 3 years in Knoxville, 3 years in Chattanooga, and worked in Nashville for 2 years. I believe having been exposed to several different city's in our state can help provide new ideas or potential solutions to issues that may face our county today. Further, being a 29-year transplant, I believe I can help provide insight into what young professionals considering Wilson County as a place to live long-term may want to see or expect to see from our county in order to help it continue to grow and thrive. Second, as a lawyer, I can provide a different angle of insight to issues and problems that may not be readily present to others (and I too hope to learn from their different perspectives).
Expectations From/For Participation
I hope to gain life-long friends and connections. I expect to utilize my Leadership Wilson experience by listening to the insights and experiences of other professionals in our community, so I can grow into a better neighbor and leader.
Community Challenge / Issue / Goal
Wilson County is uniquely situated in our state as a hot-spot for young professionals and families looking to live near the conveniences of Nashville without the high real estate prices and school zoning issues. Just in my own cul-de-sac there are two other young professional couples transplanted here from other parts of Middle Tennessee looking for a place to start a family that is relatively close to Nashville for work purposes. Many people I talk to select Wilson County because of it affordability, charm, and proximity to Nashville with relatively lighter traffic compared to the traffic of I24 and Murfreesboro. This influx of young professionals is a great opportunity for our county to win these transplants over for life to ensure the growth and success of our coming generations. However, we must ensure that our infrastructures stay ahead of our growth to prevent issues of congestion, which will deter healthy growth in our county. Further, we must work to create more white-collar work opportunities for these young professionals moving to Wilson County if we wish to keep them long term. Otherwise, we will begin to see our successful young professionals moving to Nashville or Williamson County for better work opportunities or for convenience once they have the equity necessary to do so. Ultimately, we need to make Wilson County a place that these transplants will want to consider a home for life like I did. In all things in life, laws and regulations dictate every action and decision. I would be more than happy to help play a role in steering the class through legal issues are project may face.
